This lesson is Lesson Two of a Course on computer eyewear

Lesson One explained "Computer Vision Syndrome" and its causes and effects. This Lesson covers "Dispensing Computer Eyewear" and how to enhance the value and benefits of computer-specific eyewear

LESSON TWO

Section I: Dispensing Computer Eyewear

Enhancing the Value and Benefit of Computer-specific Eyewear to Patients

Required key ingredients

  • Eyewear to correct computer vision requires special testing
  • Computer eyewear is primarily for working at the computer or other near tasks
  • Computer eyewear is not intended for all purpose viewing (driving, watching TV, etc.)

What to expect

  • in a computer specific prescription
  • It may be higher in plus power than an Rx from conventional testing
  • The range of additional plus can vary from zero to 1.75D (rarely this high)

Adaptation time

  • People adapt slowly to even the smallest amount of plus power
  • Explain this in advance
  • Tell the patient they should be fully comfortable with new Rx within one to two weeks

Reminder: Gaussian image

  • The Gaussian image on monitors produces lag of accommodation
  • Creates subconscious effort bring image into focus
  • Computer eyewear does what the eyes alone cannot

What to expect

  • Plus power for pre-presbyopes and early presbyopes (+1.25 add or less) may be higher than expected for age and computer working distance
  • Add for moderate presbyopes working at 20-26 inches can equal patient’s add for 16 inches

Advanced presbyopes

  • With reading adds of +2.00D or greater
  • expect computer add to be less than 16" reading add
  • but more than expected for computer working (intermediate) distance

Added plus power

  • in computer glasses will limit clear distance vision
  • Patients willing to take glasses off when away from computer might consider using single vision lenses
  • There are other options, however
